Staying in the Lane

I am blessed to own a new car!  My friends told me that at my age it will probably be the last car I drive before they take my keys away!  Ok, so I will enjoy it while I can!  This car is sharp looking and fun to drive.  In the age we live with modern computer technology, this car does things I can hardly imagine.  Just for an example, I have hands-free phone service, and texts read to me while driving, if I choose.  It has a camera that picks up the speed limit so I never have to wonder.  It has a light signal that warns me when someone is in my blind spot.  And wonder of wonders, it has a heated steering wheel and “bun warmers” – such luxury!  I’m almost anxious for cold days to come!

This computer-loaded vehicle also has “I-LI” – Intelligent Lane Intervention.  When driving 37 mph or above, and when the lanes are clearly marked, the I-LI system warns the driver when the vehicle has left the center of the traveling lane with an indicator and a steering wheel vibration.  The system helps the driver return the vehicle to the center of the traveling lane by applying the brakes to the left or right wheels individually, for a short period of time.  Amazing!  This feature probably will be especially helpful when driving on a long and tiring trip and when it is easy to drift into the other lane.  It certainly is a wonderful safe-guard.

As a Christian, I have access to the Holy Spirit living within me, the One who keeps me in the correct lane.  “Enter through the narrow gate.  For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:13-14).   God’s Spirit desires to be a Comforter and aid to me in my Christian walk – “the Spirit helps us in our weakness” (Romans 8:26).

If I am honest, there are many times when I have drifted outside of Christ’s will for me.  I have questioned the “lane” I’m in and the direction I am headed.  I have ignored the indicating light of my “blind spots” and I’ve wondered about His leading and selfishly asked “Why, Lord?”.  Still, I know that I am in His care and He is lovingly guiding me to my eternal destination, according to His perfect plan.  I just need to keep my hands on the wheel and my eyes on the road.  I can trust His safe-guards to lead me Home, even if I don’t understand.

Dear Lord, thank You for Your faithful guidance on this road of life.  Please “lead me in the path of righteousness” (Psalm 23:3) and “make my path straight” (Proverbs 3:6). “Show me Your ways, O Lord, teach me Your paths; guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long” (Psalm 25:4,5).  Lord, keep me from drifting.  I know I can trust that You are leading each day and I lovingly give You all praise and glory and honor, for You, alone, are worthy!
